A New School Year Begins: See What's New Inside Adelante's Education Programs

This new school year comes loaded with great news, making us proud of who we are. After twenty years of serving the Latine community, our commitment to empowering Latine women through education, enterprise, and leadership is more alive than ever. We continue to grow as a team, expanding our programs and looking for new tools and resources to continue positively impacting the lives of our participants.

Read on the see what's new this school year inside our Education Programs at Adelante Mujeres!

Adult Education Program

  • Extension of the collaboration with Portland Community College, where English and math evening classes will be offered in our building on Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6-9 pm.

  • Expansion of the Adult Program to Groner Elementary School.

  • New health-related workshops including dental health, nutrition, and much more.

“Thanks to the Adelante Mujeres English program, I have learned English, and I will take the GED test at the end of this school year! I want to motivate all of the new participants to take advantage of this unique opportunity. All the teachers at Adelante Mujeres are lovely and willing to help people learn and grow. Vamos que si se puede!” -Yolanda Vasquez, participant since 2017

Beyond Trauma Program

  • After two years of restrictions due to Covid-19, we are happy to announce the return of in-person sessions in Beaverton & Hillsboro.

  • We will have a new position, ECE Wellness Specialist, who will be providing training and guidance to our over 35+ Early Childhood Education teaching staff on:

    • The healthy social and emotional development of children.

    • Appropriate and effective strategies to guide and redirect children’s behaviors through a trauma-informed lens.

    • Culturally responsive intervention for challenging behaviors.

    • Community connections and support for families, particularly for families with a child who has a disability and/or needs accommodation.

“I didn’t want to bother or help other people in need because I felt like nobody helped me. Through the Beyond Trauma workshop, I realized I was very bitter and needed healing. I found freedom and forgiveness, and now I look forward to helping others. I hope new participants can get what they need from this beautiful program.” - Rosa, participant.

Chicas Youth Development Program:

  • We expanded to new schools  -- Liberty High School and Southridge High School -- for a total of 29 schools.

  • We are expanding the College and Career Readiness component by adding a College and Career Facilitator and a third intern for Chicas in College.

  • Implementing the new STEM component at all of our sites.

“Be the person you needed when you were a kid! Echale ganas.”  -Leticia Aguilar, Chicas manager

Early Child Education Program

  • ECE increased from 9 to 11 classrooms.

  • We began providing classes for teenage mothers.

  • ECE opened two new childcare classrooms, one at Century High School and one at Oaks Street Campus. These classrooms are focused on teen parents attending these school sites.

  • Home visits to get to know the families better. We assess the child and family’s needs and do a formal assessment (ASQ).

“We want to welcome each child by embracing their personalities and needs. Our greatest wish is to see them grow physically and mentally healthy.” - Maestra Rosalia

“Let’s work together as a team and with open communication so our children can develop their full potential and achieve their goals during this school year.” - Maestras Rosa y Sonia

“I want to welcome families and tell them to trust that their children are in a safe place and that we take care of them with much love and respect as they deserve.” - Maestra Esmeralda

Family Engagement Program

  • Parents and Children Together (PACT) sessions will be offered in the original format, inviting parents to come to the classrooms and interact one-on-one with their children.

  • Family Engagement will also provide a "Parenting with Love" workshop for parents with children ages 0-12 years old.

“The Family Engagement team works with enthusiasm and tenderness to create learning and growing opportunities for families in our community. Observing them participating in our activities is our best triumph. We hope to see more families enjoying all these resources every day.” - Sara Santiago, Family Engagement Coordinator.

For those new to Adelante Mujeres, we welcome you as you embark on a culturally immersive journey working alongside our committed team. For those families who have been with us for years, we are thrilled that you are still a part of our community. We hope this year is the best yet!
