Early Childhood Education
Early Childhood Education (ECE) is a bilingual program that teaches early literacy skills and builds kindergarten readiness among Latine immigrant preschool-aged children of women participating in our Adult Education program. We currently operate 11 public classrooms to support over 100 immigrant children to address prevailing educational disparities in Washington County.
Early Childhood Education classes and workshops are run during the school year and the next cohort begins in September 2023. Contact our program lead, Jeanny Tafoya for information about enrolling at jtafoya@adelantemujeres.org

Program Strategies
Over the past 19 years of working in Early Childhood Education, Adelante Mujeres has developed a theory of change for how to best respond to the educational crisis within the Latine community. Specifically, we have designed a set of criteria that determines how we should work with our Latine and immigrant children:
Exploration: Children learn best through exploration of their surroundings, including the natural world.
Focus: Children from socially-disadvantaged communities require focused learning environments.
Creative Instruction: Targeted creative instruction facilitates the necessary foundation for long-term academic success.
Language: An affirmation of one’s native language and culture is necessary for positive self-identity and efficacy.
Cultural Adaptation: The capacity to adapt to multiple cultures, including new language acquisition, facilitates community cohesion and problem solving.
Role Modeling: Children learn through social observation; all people serve as role models.
Parenting Support: Parents are their children’s first teachers; however, parents need support to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, and resources to confidently perform this role.

Why Early Childhood Education?
Adelante’s approach is two-generational (2Gen) with a focus on creating equitable opportunities for both Latine children and their families (parents). The skills learned in the parenting classes help them to understand the importance of education, how to effectively be an advocate for their child's education, and how to be strong leaders in their families and in our community. Our services are responsive and appropriate to each child and family’s development and their ethnic, cultural, and linguistic heritage and experiences.
