Chicas 'Journey to College' workshops help Latinas in high school prepare for college during the pandemic
The Adelante Mujeres Chicas Youth Development Program has been working with students to prepare them for the new adventure they’re about to embark on. The Journey to College workshop series offers bi-weekly workshops on college admissions, financial aid, scholarship writing, and letters of recommendation.
Both high school juniors and seniors are able to engage in a space with their peers to learn about the college process, ask questions, seek guidance, and connect with one another. Most participants are first-generation college-bound students who want to continue their education to create better opportunities for themselves, for their families, and to give back to their community.
As one participant said, “I want [to go to college] to be better for my mom and I want to enjoy working in something I feel passionate about. Overall, I want to be better for my mom.”
The series will come to a close in December with a Chicas alumni panel titled “Nuestras Experiencias (Our Experiences)”. Graduated Chicas who are currently attending college will share their own stories, talk about their experiences of being Latinas in college, share about going to school in the time of a global pandemic, and give advice on how to prepare for the journey ahead.
